[...] At its best, a Wong Kar-Wai film reproduces the fever pitch of a music-induced daydream.
Damndamndamn. I have this list like 3/4 done, but I need to take out a lot of Quantic and Os Mutantes. I get caught up in his watercolor style trick from ChungKing. Well, actually, I'm waffling between the watercolor thing of ChungKing and the somber elegance of Mood.

I watched it for a second time because I was second-guessing myself thinking I was too harsh but it only reaffirmed what I originally thought... the exposition is excruciating and the pacing limps along during the weighty monologues. There is a solid half of a WKW film in there, and I gravitate towards that and like that but I can understand the criticisms for the film, I just think they are wrong to suggest it has something to do with the shift to America and english speaking dialogue... the shift is the pronounced emphasis on dialogue and narration which was not as emphatic before as it is here.

Good review. I think you make some good points and I think the critics have been a bit too harsh. It's not a classic film, but is still interesting... Wong Kar Wai for beginners. :) Forgot to mention the great kiss at the end.

Resnais is a bit hit or miss for me in the limited films of his I have seen, but this one is the ultimate anti-anti-depressant.

Hi, Mike! Excellent blog, I spent a while browsing over your back posts and look forward to following it as you go on. Wonderful to find Hiroshima mon amour in the top post, a great film by one of my five or so most beloved filmmakers. It's definitely refreshing to come across another blogger who shares my basic project: we wouldn't love film if we didn't connect to it, if it didn't impact our thought and lives, would we? And so that is my interest in writing about it.
